USA Utility Water Loss -  6 Billion gallons per day!

Welcome.

It's Hard To Imagine …………

But most of us really don't know the difference between "water conservation" and "water accountability". Unfortunately, water utilities have been overlooking their water losses for some time - Chalking it up to "Bad Meters".

And it could be ……. But, it's probably not the only cause.

So they replace, or repair their meters.

Revenue increases - New meters are more accurate than old ones - But in many instances there remains a sizeable difference between water produced and water sold.

They then turn to conservation issues. After all, their state is mandating new appliances, toilets and showerheads which meet new EPA water conservation standards. It's the new, hot topic. And it's estimated by conservation professionals that we (Earth) could save upwards to 30% of our drinking water if all the new conservation measures were implemented. So it's easy to see why a regulatory authority would jump on the conservation bandwagon.

It gets the "Water Police" off their back, and all the conservation groups are satisfied. Conservation is very important and will help with assuring a future supply.

Good Job.

BUT …..

If every possible water conservation device and procedure were implemented by the utility's customers, and nothing is done regarding the water losses on the utility (supply) side of the meter, or, retail rates were not adjusted for the potential "revenue decline", there could possibly be a reduction in revenue equivalent to the amount of the conservation.

Less revenue? - Most of us would not do well with a 30% reduction in revenue. In addition, the percentage of Non-Revenue Water (NRW) would increase because the amount of sales and production decreased; But the amount of your losses did not. Your ILI stayed about the same. And the irony is that some States are mandating that YOU - The Water Utility - "implement" and "patrol" the very same end-user conservation programs that could reduce your revenue.

So, what's next? You have new meters, a world class conservation program --- But you're still losing large amounts of water. Could there be another reason for your water loss? Just how do you solve the "
Water Loss Puzzle"?
